The part is discontinued: what to do when there is no spare
The maker says there is no spare and the machine still works. The five routes left, in order, and when printing the part is the answer.
The conversation is always the same. You ring the service line, give the model number, and are told the machine is eight years old and the part is discontinued. The machine works perfectly. What broke is three euros’ worth of plastic. And the only alternative offered is buying a new one.
You are not out of options. There are five, and they are worth trying in this order, because the first ones are free and the last ones cost money.
The five routes, in order
- 1Search the part number, not the appliance number. Nearly every part has a reference moulded on the inside. That number turns up exploded diagrams, forums and old-stock sellers that the appliance model never finds.
- 2Check whether the same part fits another model. Manufacturers reuse parts across ranges and years. A part “discontinued” for your model is sometimes still sold for its neighbour.
- 3Try breakers and old stock. For cars and machinery it is the most direct route if the part still exists anywhere. For appliances it is usually a dead end.
- 4Look for the 3D model on Printables, Thingiverse or GrabCAD. Somebody may have been here before. Check the dimensions before trusting it: many models are for a different version.
- 5Have it made. If the part is plastic and is not a safety part, printing it is nearly always cheaper than a new appliance, and usually comes out stronger than the original.
Why the copy usually lasts longer
It sounds like sales talk and it is not. The original was moulded in the cheapest plastic that would outlast the warranty, with the thinnest wall the tool allowed, because every gram multiplied by a million units is money. Reproducing it carries none of those constraints: the wall can be thickened, a fillet added on the corner where it snapped, and a better material chosen than the original. A printed part costs the same at two millimetres of wall as at one.
The detail that matters most is that fillet. A moulded part almost always breaks in the same place: a sharp corner where stress concentrates. If the copy has a radius there, it will not break where the original did.
What we will not print
Anything whose failure could hurt somebody. Brakes, steering, child-seat anchors, seat belts, structural members, helmets, ladders, scaffold parts, anything under pressure or containing gas. It is not commercial caution: a printed part has layers, and layers are a fracture plane that does not exist in a moulded or machined part. On a trim piece that does not matter. On an anchor it does.
What do I do when the maker says the part is discontinued?
Work through the five routes above in order, because the first ones are free: search the number moulded on the part rather than the appliance model, check whether the same part fits another model, try breakers and old stock, and look for a published 3D model. If none of those lands, and the part is plastic and not a safety part, reproducing it is the route that remains.
What does reproducing a discontinued part cost?
They are two separate amounts: the modelling, quoted before any work starts and depending on how complicated the part is, and the printing, which depends on volume. For a small simple part the total tends to land well below replacing the whole machine, which is the comparison that actually matters.
Is it legal to print a branded spare?
The practical line is whether the part is for you or for sale. Reproducing a spare for something you bought, to fix it and use it yourself, is the everyday case and raises no issues. Making that same part in quantity to sell as a replacement is a different matter and is worth taking advice on before starting.
I do not have the whole part, a piece is missing. Is that usable?
Almost always yes. The cavity the part sits in usually says more than the part does, and the missing geometry can be inferred from what surrounds it. Send photos of the housing and of everything it touches.
How long from sending you the broken part?
The modelling sets the pace and runs from a couple of days to a week depending on complexity; printing follows the normal lead times, from 24 hours to five working days. If you are in a hurry, say so at the start: sometimes the part can be simplified to shorten the modelling.
